How can you recognize a real gemstone?

Recognizing genuine gemstones can sometimes be a challenge, especially if you are not an expert on gemstones. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to tell if a stone is real or not. In this blog I will tell you how to recognize it using a number of tips.

Recognize a genuine gemstone

  1. Weight: Real gemstones are much heavier than counterfeit/synthetic stones. So keep in mind the weight of the stone when you hold it in your hand. If it feels super light, you can start doubting the authenticity.
  2. Hardness: Gemstones are much harder than imitation stones. This means that they are less likely to get scratched or damaged. Therefore, use a moissanite tester or hardness scale to determine the hardness of the stone,
  3. Transparency: Many counterfeit stones are not clear or transparent, while genuine gemstones often are. So keep the transparency of the stone in mind when viewing it.
  4. Color: Some counterfeit stones have a suspiciously bright or unnatural color. However, genuine gemstones often have a subtler and more natural color.
  5. Listen: Gemstones give a clear sound when you tap them on a hard surface, such as a table or granite countertop. Counterfeit bricks produce a dull sound.
  6. Observation: With the naked eye or under a magnifying glass, you can often see inclusions (internal imperfections) and color differences in genuine gemstones, while in counterfeit stones you cannot.

Recognize gemstone authenticity

Keep in mind that these tips are not always 100% reliable. Some counterfeit stones are so well made that they are almost indistinguishable from real gems. When in doubt, consult a gemstone professional.

In general it can be said that real gemstones are more expensive than counterfeit, and certificates are often present, which then give a guarantee that it is a real stone.

Always use these tips as a guide, but always be careful and consult an expert if you are in doubt about the authenticity of a stone.

True gems at Zenvya

Zenvya only sells gemstone jewelry with real gemstones. Our gemstone jewelry is randomly tested for authenticity and we work together with a regular producer.

We have deliberately chosen not to include a certificate of authenticity per piece of jewelry, because we mainly sell semi-precious stones and then the cost price of the jewelry will be too high. An official certificate of authenticity can only be officially issued by Naturalis , among others.

Feel free to take a look at Naturalis, where you will also find a small part of the Zenvya collection in the museum shop!
